Academic Competition Team

The Murray Academic Team competes in quiz bowl competition by answering questions dealing with all topics of human knowledge, including: math, science, social studies, literature, fine arts, sports, and general trivia.  Academic team members benefit from studying a broad range of academic subjects, increasing memorization and study skills, learning to work in teams in a cooperative and competitive arena.

A quiz bowl competition is typically played with a lockout buzzer system between two teams of six players each. A moderator reads questions to the teams, whose players try to be the first buzz in with a correct answer. If correct, they score points for their team. The team with the most points at the end of the round, wins.

Our Murray FNA/HOSA chapter is one of many in the state and across the nation. Throughout the year we do a variety of activities, including fundraising for our state and national competitions, volunteering in the community and beyond, bringing in guest speakers, job shadowing, teaching younger kids about healthy habits, and training activities (First Aid, CPR, etc) within our club. State HOSA competition is held in March every year in Des Moines, and if students place in the top 3 in their event they are eligible to compete at Nationals which are held every June. This year’s 2020-2021 nationals will be held in Orlando, Florida.

Clarke County Organization of Philanthropic Services, otherwise known as CCOPS, is a group of twenty students in Clarke County funded by the DEKKO Foundation. Interviews are held at the end of each school year to fill the graduating seniors’ spots from both Murray and Clarke Schools. The group then decides on a Focus and Mission Statement for the upcoming school year. This will be the focus for all events and granting throughout that year. We strive to use our time, talent, and treasures to enhance our community and promote the love of mankind.
