Current Challenges
During the winter months of 2024, a comprehensive facility conditions assessment was conducted for the Murray Community School District. The assessment revealed that the most critical issues are concentrated in the district’s oldest structure—the original three-story building constructed in 1924.
Although this building accounts for just 30% of the district’s total square footage, it is responsible for approximately 72% of all documented facility deficiencies. Currently, it houses the majority of the junior and senior high school programming, as well as a weight room used throughout the day by health classes.
Key challenges identified in the 1924 building include:
– Lack of ventilation air in occupied spaces
– Ongoing heating and cooling issues
– Major accessibility compliance problems
– Failing plaster ceilings posing safety hazards
– Life and physical safety concerns
– Deteriorating exterior windows beyond their expected lifespan
These conditions highlight the urgent need for investment in safe, accessible, and modern learning environments for all students.
How This Project Addresses The Challenges
To directly address the critical concerns identified in the 1924 building and beyond, the Murray Community School District is moving forward with a targeted bond proposal built on a phased, cost-responsible approach. This proposal reflects a long-term commitment to responsible stewardship, modern educational experiences, and the tradition, pride, and resilience that define the Murray community.
Why Now?
Urgent Facility Concerns:
The 1924 building—currently housing most Junior and Senior High students—contains the majority of the district’s documented facility deficiencies, including safety hazards, accessibility barriers, and outdated systems. These issues will continue to worsen and grow more costly over time if left unaddressed.
Protecting Student Safety:
Structural concerns, inadequate ventilation, and failing interior finishes pose real risks to students and staff. Additionally, it is too costly and unattainable to fix all deficiencies and phase out this three-story structure. It is more cost-effective to build new in order to meet the needs of today’s students. Addressing these issues now is essential to ensure a safe, healthy learning environment today and in the future.
Supporting Modern Learning:
Today’s educational needs are vastly different than they were a century ago. Upgrading and reconfiguring spaces now ensures students have access to the hands-on, flexible learning environments required for future success.
Responsible Timing:
By acting now, the district can take advantage of current financing tools and favorable interest rates, while minimizing disruption through a phased construction approach. Delaying improvements would likely increase costs and compound existing challenges.
Community Momentum:
There is strong community pride in Murray schools. Moving forward now shows a commitment to preserving that legacy while building a brighter, more sustainable future for students and families.
